Silicone polyethers are highly efficient wetting agents which effectively reduce the surface tension between a solid substrate and a liquid. Silicone polyethers are polydimethyl siloxanes which are modified with ethylene oxide / propylene oxide segments. This modification of the hydrophobic siloxane backbone leads to products which are soluble or dispersible in water and which have a distinct surface activity. If the hydrophobic siloxane share is dominating, the surface tension of the water will decline when the wetting agent is added, i.e. the specific efficiency of the wetting agent will increase. If on the other hand the polyether unit is increased, the wetting agents will become more hydrophilic but the surface tension of the wetting agent solution will simultaneously increase. Wetting agents with a specific effect for aqueous and solvent-based systems can be produced through variations and a targeted adjustment of these parameters. Besides wetting, the spreading capacity is of major importance in some applications. A new, optimised polyether-modified trisiloxane which stands out for its extraordinary spreading capacity was developed to meet this demand. This special product is applied in colours and varnishes but also as an additive in plant protection formulations.
